What Is Massage?
Massage is the act of rubbing & stroking muscles, ligaments, and tendons, through the skin. Many different types of massage exist. Different techniques are used for each type of massage, but all of them vary in the targeting, pressure, and depth.
Types of Massage
Also known as a ‘relaxation massage’, Swedish Massage uses techniques such as kneading, long, relaxing, strokes, and circular motions to put your body & mind at ease.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage techniques use higher pressure to penetrate to muscles, ligaments, and tendons that are beneath the superficial layers. The strokes of deep massage are generally slower and more focused.
Deep tissue massage is commonly used to relieve areas of pain caused by past injuries or trauma.
Some people find deep tissue massage uncomfortable. If you have booked a deep tissue massage, but become uncomfortable during it, please tell your massage therapist right away. They will gladly change techniques so that you have a good experience.
Sports massage generally focuses on areas that athletes have injured or traumatized at some point. In some cases, an athlete will get sports massage as a preventative measure on areas that are generally problematic for people in their sport; the shoulder & elbow for a baseball pitcher, for example.
Trigger Point Massage
A trigger point is an area of flesh that is extremely irritable or painful. People commonly refer to these areas as a ‘knot’. Trigger points can be caused by a variety of things; inflammation, muscle spasms, injuries, stress, tension, and anxiety.
A trigger point can cause further complications, such as pain radiating outward from it, and inability to bend or loose a joint.
In many cases, the area that hurts may not be the area that requires a trigger point massage treatment. Pain in the body is oftentimes displaced from the cause.
Trigger point massage focuses on relieving the root cause of whatever trigger point symptoms you are suffering from.
Health Benefits of Massage
Modern medicine has only recently begun to realize the medical benefits of massage. It is still not a well-studied area, due simply to how medical & pharmaceutical research is funded. Scientific studies on massage have conclusively & convincingly shown that massage is an effective treatment for a wide variety of ailments. Massage is increasingly used as a complementary treatment, alongside other medical interventions. Health insurance companies are covering more massage related care than ever before.
Relief from stress, pain, and muscle tension, are benefits of massage that are obvious to anyone who has ever had a massage.
Additionally, studies have shown that massage also helps patients suffering from:
- Digestive disorders
- Insomnia related to stress
- Myofascial pain syndrome
- Soft tissue strains or injuries
- Sports injuries
- Temporomandibular joint pain
Beyond the benefits for specific conditions or diseases, some people enjoy massage because it often produces feelings of caring, comfort and connection.
Despite its benefits, massage isn’t meant as a replacement for regular medical care. Let your doctor know you’re trying massage and be sure to follow any standard treatment plans you have.
